Goole is Anglo-Saxon word meaning "open sewer" (a rather unfortunate translation that actually means an outlet to the river) and it barely existed as a town until around the start of the 19th Century when it was built up around the diversion of the river Don at the request of the King who liked to hunt in the area which was often flooded and spoiled his enjoyment. The building of the canal from Goole to Leeds in 1826 was the start of the town proper.
